What actually happens during an electrical test and tag visit

If you have never had a test and tag visit before, it helps to know what will happen, how much of your day it takes, and what you should have in your hands at the end of it.

1. Before we arrive: scoping

We start with a short conversation about what you have and where it lives: the workshop bench, the pump shed, the packing floor, the office, the crib room, the accommodation block. Rough numbers are fine. The point is to agree what is in scope, work out access and timing, and avoid the two most common problems — missing whole areas, or testing the same items twice.

2. Building or updating the register

Each item in scope gets an identifier and a location so results can be tracked over time. If you already have a register, we work from it rather than starting again. This is what turns a pile of tags into records you can search later.

3. Visual inspection

Every item is inspected before it is tested. We are looking for the things that actually hurt people:

  • Cut, crushed, kinked or heat-damaged leads
  • Cracked plugs and sockets, bent or loose pins, signs of arcing or heat
  • Cord anchorages pulled out, exposed conductors, taped repairs
  • Damaged casings, missing guards, blocked vents, water ingress
  • Non-compliant or improvised arrangements, such as daisy-chained boards

A meaningful share of failures are found at this stage. If an item fails visually, it does not proceed to testing — it comes out of service.

4. Electrical testing

Items that pass inspection are tested using calibrated equipment, with the tests chosen to suit the class of equipment and following the procedures in the applicable standard for in-service equipment. Most portable items take under a minute. Larger or awkward equipment takes longer, and anything that cannot be safely isolated for testing is flagged rather than forced.

5. Tagging: pass and fail

Passed items are tagged with the test date, the tester and a next-check reference, so anyone picking the item up can see its status. Failed items are tagged out, separated from working equipment and — where you agree — removed from the area so they cannot quietly return to the job.

6. Failures: what happens next

We do not repair electrical equipment. Failed items are reported with the reason for failure so you can make a call: replace it, retire it, or have it repaired by an appropriately licensed person. Repairs, fixed wiring and anything requiring a Certificate of Electrical Safety are referred to a licensed electrician or Registered Electrical Contractor — see Energy Safe Victoria for the licensing boundaries.

7. Your report and next-due plan

At the end of the visit you receive a digital asset register and a plain-English report: totals, item-level results, failures with locations, and a suggested next-check window based on your environment and how the equipment is used. We will not invent a single statutory interval — frequency depends on conditions, use, risk, manufacturer guidance and the applicable standards.

How long does it take?

It depends almost entirely on item count, how spread out the site is, and how much access we get. A small office is usually a short visit. A farm with a workshop, three sheds, a pump site and an accommodation block is a planned day, often staged so no one area is disrupted for long. We would rather quote realistically than promise a number before seeing the scope.
